Beloved broadcaster and soap opera writer Jim Hopkins has sadly died at the age of 79. The New Zealander was a regular on screen, working as a writer for the soap Close to Home in the 1970s and going on to work on satirical comedy series Public Eye. Jim also worked as a news presenter and on documentaries, and his book Blokes and Sheds was later adapted for TV.

Later in his career, Jim became a local councillor for the Waitaki District, serving as deputy mayor for three years. Now Mayor Mel Tavendale has led tributes to the star, stating: “He was a fierce advocate for the people of Waitaki, both within and beyond council, and he scrutinised every detail. He kept us all honest.

“The council chamber will not be the same without him, his passionate arguments, attention to detail and incredible wit.

"Jim believed in democracy and he believed in Waitaki. I can only say again how deeply Jim will be missed as a councillor and as a friend."

Banks Peninsula Council chief exec Alex Parmley, who also worked with the star, said: “I extend my condolences to his family and friends. We are working with Jim’s family to provide a fitting farewell for a deeply community-minded man whose commitment is something we can all look up to.”

A friend of Jim’s said: “Great guy was Jim. I went to school and was good mates with his son, so stayed at his house a lot in Lyttelton. Fond memories, he was a lovely guy.”

The Waitaki District Council flag is now being flown at half-mast in Jim’s honour, while a condolences book is available at the council offices for people to sign.

Details of a memorial service are expected to be released in the coming days.
