A company supplying historic and collector's coins in the UK has plunged into administration. The London Mint Office Ltd, which operates a distribution centre from an address in Tonypandy, Rhondda Cynon Taf distributes historic, commemorative and collector coins and medals.

A statement on the company's website says administrators were called in on July 31. Michael Magnay and Jonny Marston of Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP have been appointed as joint administrators of the business, reports Wales Online. The coin collector's website states: "On 31 July 2026, Michael Magnay and Jonny Marston of Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP were appointed as joint administrators of The London Mint Office Limited in administration (the "Company").

"The joint administrator’s encourage anyone who has an interest in the company’s stock or assets to contact them on: INS_THLMOL@alvarezandmarsal.com The affairs, business and property of the company are being managed by the joint administrators who act as agents of the company and without personal liability."

Founded in 2006, The London Mint Office describes itself as one of the UK's most trusted suppliers of historic, commemorative and collector coins, offering a range of products aimed at coin enthusiasts and collectors.

In 2018, The London Mint Office donated a collection of World War Two Dambusters briefing documents and a commemorative coin to Porthcawl Museum, highlighting the area's strong historical connections to RAF operations.

Many of the crews involved in the famous Dambusters raid had trained at RAF St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan and RAF Stormy Down near Pyle, Bridgend, with personnel from 14 of the 16 aircraft linked to the Welsh bases.

The private company, which operates a head office in London and a distribution and processing centre in Wales, states on its LinkedIn profile that it employs between 51 and 200 people.

However, its latest available accounts show that it employed 248 staff members in 2024, with a significant proportion of the workforce based at its Welsh processing centre.

It is a private commercial distributor of commemorative medals and collector coins. It says on its website that it is a privately owned company established in 2006 and part of Samlerhuset AS, a Norwegian company which is also one of Europe's biggest distributors of commemorative coins and medals and the owner of the Norwegian Mint.

"Together with its sister organisations across Europe, The London Mint Office provides a wide range of coins from ancient to modern, originating from virtually every country in the world, and has no official connection to the UK government or the Royal Mint," it says on its website.

Royal Mint, owned by HM Treasury and operated from premises in Llantrisant, is responsible for all official UK circulating coins and bullion.
