Shortly after posting, fans flocked to the comments. Among them, some noted that the Springwatch presenter shouldn't have reacted and branded his response as "unhelpful".

"@chrisgpackham2, while I completely agree that farming needs to change, I think given the platform you have, you could do better when making posts like this," wrote one. "To me, this comes across as divisive and an 'us vs them' post, which to my mind is really unhelpful when I know you know farming is actually crucial to our survival and very much part of the picture when it comes to improving the environment for all species."

Echoing this sentiment, a second commented: "To be honest, I think it's a shame you are both clashing heads when it's the government, water companies and councils, etc., that need the attention. Currently, the attention is on both of you disagreeing with each other, which helps no one!

Chris' post comes just days after Jeremy - who runs Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds - called his critique of Clarkson's Farm "b******s". Chris, who appears on Celebrity Gogglebox, had originally fumed over an episode of the Prime Video show.

"Already, right, that's not what a farm looks like," the BBC presenter had said. "Most farms are horrible monocultures, which have been sprayed with deadly chemicals time and time again. The ground is pumped full of fertiliser, and loads of the animals are indoors in crates, being crushed and kept in the dark.

"That's an idealistic view of a farm, and it puts the wrong idea in people's minds. And that's only the titles!"

Hitting back, Jeremy addressed Chris' comments in his column for The Sun. "It's b******s. And Chris knows it's b******s because, back in 2012, he came to Diddly Squat and spent the day in our woods, foraging and bird watching. If there had been some animals in a crate, being crushed, I'm sure he would have noticed and said something."
