Nostalgic pub chain Beefeater has announced it will permanently shut all 106 of its remaining UK restaurants on September 10, 2026. Parent company Whitbread is withdrawing entirely from the branded standalone restaurant market, bringing the curtain down on the historic 52-year-old steakhouse chain, along with sister brands Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block.

Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul directly blamed crippling cost pressures stemming from Government policy. In particular, recent increases in employer National Insurance contributions and business rates rendered the traditional pub-restaurant business model 'unsustainable'.

Whitbread will now shift its attention firmly towards its highly lucrative Premier Inn hotel operation.

The closures form part of a sweeping £250 million restructuring plan, with approximately 600 new Premier Inn rooms set to be constructed within converted restaurant spaces.

Many former Beefeater sites will be transformed into smaller, integrated kitchens catering exclusively to hotel guests, and will no longer operate as public houses or walk-in dining establishments.

Any locations that fall short of the company's hotel return targets will be disposed of or leased back as going concerns.

The wide-ranging restructuring across Beefeater and Brewers Fayre places 3,800 jobs at risk throughout the UK and Ireland. Whitbread has initiated consultation processes and maintains it will endeavour to safeguard positions wherever possible by redeploying affected staff into alternative roles across its broader hotel operations.

Following the announcement, numerous Brits took to social media to reminisce about their childhood visits to Beefeater with their families.

Many confessed they felt 'sad' about the chain's decline, though some also observed it appeared to have deteriorated in recent years.

One person wrote: "Until I went to university the only restaurant I'd ever been to was a Beefeater. We'd go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it.

"A steak or a mixed grill which I never got at home, followed by a Knickerbocker Glory. Fantastic times. I went back a couple of years ago. The place looked run down. I feel sad about this but I guess the fact I hadn't been to one for 30 years is part of the problem."

Another shared: "When I was first working away from home, we did events work and the big treat was a Beefeater on the last night. It was genuinely an event because we were used to Neefeater being the family occasion that we would get a few times per year."

A third contributed: "The profiterole surprise... the crispy potato skins... the memories lol. We have one about 35 mins from where I live now but I looked at the menu and it looked completely s**t so have never taken the family despite the fond childhood memories of going regularly with my mum dad and sisters."

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "I think there was one in Esher, my mum used to stop on the way home back from Portsmouth as a treat. My absolute favourite. How times have changed."

Another customer wrote: "We've gone there for any family gathering in the last 30 years. It was like an automatic meeting spot if someone was coming back into town."

Meanwhile, a further commenter concluded: "Beefeater was always a local community hub, whether it's people going for a pint in the sun or just a quick bite to eat. Like you said, the ones near me are all run down too. Staff were always great though."
