Experiencing some of the world's most iconic landmarks up close is amongst the greatest pleasures of any holiday. However, that enjoyment could be somewhat diminished if hundreds of fellow tourists are present at the same time.

Since the pandemic, holidaymakers from across the globe have been venturing out on trips once more. This has resulted in some of the world's premier destinations feeling remarkably crowded. In the UK, Edinburgh Castle was crowned the world's most overcrowded landmark. Now, fresh research from MoneyTransfers.com has identified the most overcrowded tourist destinations across the globe.

Where was the busiest spot for a holiday?

According to the team's findings, Phuket in Thailand is the most crowded tourist destination worldwide. The Thai hotspot boasts 118 tourists for every local resident.

Phuket ranks amongst Thailand's premier beach destinations and features several of the world's finest beaches including Kata and Karon.

That said, visitors may discover the beaches are heaving, especially during peak season. Thailand dominated the rankings with Pattaya and Krabi also securing places in the top 10.

Predictably, Venice made the top 10 and the Italian hotspot has a staggering 21 tourists for every resident. The city is considering implementing a tourist fee in a bid to tackle the crowds.

Rhodes also featured on the congested list, attracting more than 20 visitors for every resident, while Miami rounded off the rankings with 18 tourists for every local inhabitant.
